Norma Jean Sommerdorf was born Juny 17, 1926, in Britt, Iowa. She became a librarian, and later worked as manager of the Minnesota governor's mansion, and worked in Washington, D.C. in a senator's office. Next she worked in a travel agency, and in 1993 began a writing career. She also cared for four adopted children, several foster children, and many international students.
